Between COVID delaying our departure a month and a half, Darryn’s ten months of training in D.C. and a job application process that lasted for over a year, I have been anticipating this very day for around two years. We are departing for our first post, Nuevo Laredo, a border town in Mexico. Admittedly, this first post is not sending us as far from home as we envisioned, however, as midwest and east coast natives the Texas/Mexico border is sure to be foreign land.

We are embarking on a journey neither of us could have imagined just a couple years ago. My husband is a newly sworn United States foreign service officer. He’ll work at different posts (U.S. embassies and consulates) every two years with his family, us, in tow. The decision to leave our comfortable New York City life and careers is grounded in the belief that this opportunity would enrich our children through experiencing different cultures and having a greater understanding of the world. An opportunity, in our eyes, of a lifetime. An opportunity that would diverge the life paths of our children from those of our own upbringing.
I have never felt braver. I am also oh so terrified. It makes me proud that we are choosing a path where we will feel challenged and uncomfortable, because it will continue to push us to grow - both individually and as a family unit. Follow us on our journey. Visit us. Pray for us, especially our children - Lucille and Baby Nuevo Laredo due February 2021 - who did not choose this lifestyle for themselves, but who, we hope, understand and come to appreciate our decision. This whole thing is for them.
